UPDATE Sr. Diane Marie's Funeral - It has recently come to our attention that Wake and Funeral Mass for Sister Diane Marie at the Franciscan Sisters' Mother House will be PRIVATE, please do not drive out to Lemont. There will be a special Memorial Mass in her honor at the Parish next week. See below for more info ...

BCAP Food Pantry - Under New Management - The Parish food pantry is now under new management! Thank you to Barb Cunningham, Rita Morano and Mary Lang for stepping up and helping to support this important ministry of our parish. See below for our most current needs.

Prayers for the Sick - Both in the Sunday Bulletin, and here in the Weekly Newsletter, we list the names of those who are in sick and in need of our prayers. These people are remembered each week as part of the Universal Prayer/Petitions. If you would like to add you someone's name to the sick list, please email or call the Parish Office. Please also email/call us when it's OK to remove them from the sick list as this helps to ensure our list is up to date.

Online Book of Intentions - Also, if you have a special intention that you would like us to pray for, see below for the link that you can click and then enter your intention. These intentions are also prayed for each week in the Universal Prayer/Petitions. They are private, no one can see them except us, and can be anonymous if you wish.

Raffle Ticket Sales for support of the Congregation of the Resurrection

Next weekend, at ST. JOHN BERCHMANS, we will be selling raffle tickets to support the Senior Priests and Brothers and the Formation Program for the Congregation of the Resurrection. Tickets are $25 each or 6 for $100. Bring your return address labels to use on the ticket stubs. If you are not prepared to purchase the tickets we will have envelopes for you to mail them. The parish of the first place winner will receive a $500 bonus. If raffles are not your thing, a basket for donations will be available.

Carlo's Salon

Join us every Thursday in the chapel at St. Hedwig Church, after the 8 a.m. Daily Mass, for “Carlo’s Salon”. Led by Fr. Gene, “Carlo’s Salon” is a discussion group among individuals who seek to learn more about the Bible, the sacraments, religion in general, and life itself. The next couple Thursdays will be devoted to an exploration of the Gospels of Mark and John. So bring a copy of the New Testament, and come join your friends!

Blessed Carlo Acutis Parish offers two-year preparation classes for the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation.

First Holy Communion class is for children 7 years of age and older
Confirmation is for children who are entering 7th grade or higher.

We also offer ongoing formation classes for the children who have received their Sacraments and are interested in continuing to learn more about their faith.

Our Religious Education Classes will begin Sunday, September 17, 2023. Classes meet weekly in person on Sunday mornings and include Mass participation at 11:00 am at the St. Hedwig Church Site. All classes are taught in English and use bilingual materials.

La Parroquia del Beato Carlo Acutis ofrece clases de preparación de dos años para los Sacramentos de la Sagrada Comunión y la Confirmación.

La clase de Primera Comunión es para estudiantes de 7 años de edad y en adelante,
La confirmación es para estudiantes que ingresan a 7° grado o superior.

También ofrecemos clases de formación continua para los estudiantes que han recibido sus Sacramentos y están interesados en seguir aprendiendo más sobre su fe.

Nuestras clases de Educación Religiosa comenzarán el domingo 17 de septiembre de 2023. Los estudiantes de las clases se reúnen semanalmente en persona los domingos por la mañana e incluyen la participación en la Misa a las 11:00 am en la iglesia Santa Eduviges. Todas las clases se imparten en inglés y utilizan materiales bilingües.

Saint of the Day for August 16

Saint Stephen of Hungary’s Story

The Church is universal, but its expression is always affected—for good or ill—by local culture. There are no “generic” Christians; there are Mexican Christians, Polish Christians, Filipino Christians. This fact is evident in the life of Stephen, national hero and spiritual patron of Hungary.

Born a pagan, he was baptized around the age of 10, together with his father, chief of the Magyars, a group who migrated to the Danube area in the ninth century. At 20, he married Gisela, sister to the future emperor, Saint Henry. When he succeeded his father, Stephen adopted a policy of Christianization of the country for both political and religious reasons. He suppressed a series of revolts by pagan nobles and welded the Magyars into a strong national group. He asked the pope to provide for the Church’s organization in Hungary—and also requested that the pope confer the title of king upon him. He was crowned on Christmas day in 1001.

Stephen established a system of tithes to support churches and pastors and to relieve the poor. Out of every 10 towns one had to build a church and support a priest. He abolished pagan customs with a certain amount of violence, and commanded all to marry, except clergy and religious. He was easily accessible to all, especially the poor.

In 1031, his son Emeric died, and the rest of Stephen’s days were embittered by controversy over his successor. His nephews attempted to kill him. He died in 1038 and was canonized, along with his son, in 1083.

Reflection

God’s gift of holiness is a Christlike love of God and humanity. Love must sometimes bear a stern countenance for the sake of ultimate good. Christ attacked hypocrites among the Pharisees, but died forgiving them. Paul excommunicated the incestuous man at Corinth “that his spirit may be saved.” Some Christians fought the Crusades with noble zeal, in spite of the unworthy motives of others.

Today, after senseless wars, and with a deeper understanding of the complex nature of human motives, we shrink from any use of violence—physical or “silent.” This wholesome development continues as people debate whether it is possible for a Christian to be an absolute pacifist or whether evil must sometimes be repelled by force.
